Walkthrough

  1. Plan the hunt at Winteredge
The Winteredge harbormaster lays out a chart weighted with stones. 'Abyss shelf is six miles out. We rig the heavy lines from the coast. Three boats, four lines each. You take the lead.'
  2. Haul gear up the coast trail
Four coils of cable, two iron hooks the size of your arm, and a barrel of bait. Your shoulders are wrecked by the time you reach the cliff.
  3. Rig the heavy lines at the coast
You sink the hooks past the shelf. The cables go slack in cold deep water. The crew on the shore waits. Nothing for an hour.
  4. Scout the abyss shelf
From the ledge you see the shadow rise and stop fifty feet below the surface. It is not a fish shape. It is a back. Then it sinks.
  5. Set the second line at the coast
Second line in. Heavier bait, deeper drop. The cable tightens, slacks, tightens again. The barrel on the shore tips and rights itself.
  6. Wait out the night at the campfire
The crew rotates the watch. You take third shift. Around third hour the cable on the cliff sings a single long note and goes quiet.
  7. Pull the world-fish to the rocks
It takes six of you on the cable and four hours of pulling. The thing comes up dead from the depth change, longer than the boat shed, dark blue and grey. It is a fish. Just one nothing was supposed to bring up.
  8. Weigh the catch at Winteredge
The harbormaster reads the scale and reads it again. 'Three towns of fish. Maybe four. We butcher here and ship the cuts out cold. Get to the kitchen.'
  9. Butcher and cook the first cuts
The flesh is white and clean and cooks like any other deep-water catch. The first plate goes to the crew. The second goes to the harbormaster. The third you eat yourself.
  10. Deliver the Woodwater share
The Woodwater harbormaster opens the cold crate and doesn't say anything for a long time. 'My dock ate fish for a month off this. Tell your harbormaster the debt's noted.'
  11. Deliver the Shadeshore share
The Shadeshore harbormaster signs the receipt. 'The tracker wants to see the bones when you're done with them. For now, this feeds my crew through winter.'
  12. Deliver the Cropshore share
She unwraps the first cut and laughs once, short. 'Tomas's skiff was nothing to this. You took the thing that took his oar. Sit. Eat.'
  13. Close the hunt at Winteredge
The harbormaster pours two cups. 'Four coasts owe you a winter of meals. The bones go to Shadeshore. The story goes everywhere. Drink.'
