A Polite Audience

A surviving vampire of the old estate has asked, courteously, for a word.

Requirements

Walkthrough

  1. Hear the harbormaster's message
The harbormaster sets a sealed envelope on the counter. 'It was on my desk this morning. The hand is older than I am. He asks for an hour of your time on the cliff. He has not killed anyone in this town since the Lord fell.'
  2. Walk the estate drive again
The drive is mended where the gate used to hang. New gravel. A lantern lit in the front window for the first time in months. Whoever lit it wanted you to see it from the road.
  3. Meet him in the sitting room
He rises when you enter and offers his hand the old way, palm flat and turned aside. 'I served the house. I did not serve him. I have an old contract I would like released before its other party finds it.'
  4. Read the contract over tea
The kitchen is warm and surprisingly clean. He pours and does not drink. The contract is parchment, four centuries old, signed in two hands. The second signature is one you have heard whispered: an ancient who has slept under the ridge since before the town was built.
  5. Return to the harbormaster
She reads the contract and folds it carefully. 'He has been here longer than my grandfather's grandfather. If he says the binding can be released, I believe him. Help him finish it. Please.'
