- Meet the harbormaster at Winteredge BankThe harbormaster keeps her voice low. 'We've lost nineteen in six months. Quiet ones, no bodies, no fuss. The estate up on the cliff stopped sending letters back the same week it started.'
- Hear out the innkeeperThe innkeeper pours you a cup and sits without being asked. 'He came down twice. Tall man, very old, very polite. Asked after the families with the most children. Left a coin for the trouble.'
- Inspect the drained livestockThree sheep in the back paddock, all dry as paper. The cuts on their necks are clean and small. The farmer says she's losing one a fortnight and nobody she's told will come look.
- Scout the estate groundsThe estate sits behind a stone wall and a long gravel drive. No staff outside. No dogs. The lamps in the windows haven't been lit in a week.
- Follow the trail to the gateCart ruts run up to the gate and stop. Boot prints come down the other way and none go back. The hedge along the trail is brown for thirty yards in either direction.
- Collect the priest's sealThe harbormaster hands you a small lead seal stamped with the town's mark. 'The priest blessed it this morning. It'll keep him from leaving the room he's in. You only get to use it once.'
- Cut down the thrall at the doorShe met you at the door in a maid's apron and didn't speak. She fought like she'd been doing it for thirty years and didn't remember any of them. You ended her on the threshold.
- Rest at the campfire until dawnYou wait out the hours by the fire on the cliff above the estate. He'll be weakest in the first hour of full light and he knows that as well as you do.
- Walk the drive at first lightThe drive is white with frost. Crows on the wall, none on the house. You set the lead seal into the doorframe and the front door opens for you on its own.
- Cross the manor to the sitting roomHe stands when you enter and inclines his head. 'I had hoped this could be settled by letter. I see it cannot. I will not be using my chair again.'
- End the fell vampire lordHe fought the way old men fight, slowly and without waste. The curtains came down in the second pass and the first sun came in and he aged four hundred years between one breath and the next.
