Scholars need a count of the Veilbridge rift before its new rhythm shifts again.

Walkthrough

1. Sign on with scholars at Veilbridge Bank
   'The rift's been off-cycle for a week. We want a clean count from each station and a comparison against the conduit. Don't improvise.'
2. Read the fragment station
   The fragment ticks twelve times in a minute. Old count was eight. The scholar with the ledger doesn't look surprised, which is what bothers you.
3. Count the rift's main pulse
   The rift gives you fourteen pulses in two minutes. The cycle's shortening, not lengthening. You note the difference and don't say it aloud.
4. Compare against the conduit
   Conduit's the same rate as last week. Whatever's changing at the rift isn't reaching the conduit yet. That's good news. Probably.
5. Deliver the survey to Veilbridge Bank
   'Shortening. We thought so. Don't tell the apprentices. They're scared enough of the rift already.'
