2. Audit the broker books at the market
   Three books, two seasons. Two of them are honest if sloppy. The third's been thumbing the weights on grain trades. You mark every entry that needs rewording.
3. Confront the broker at the kitchen
   He laughs once and then looks at your notes. 'Fine. I'll square it before the assessor arrives. Don't tell the clerk it was me.' You tell her anyway.
4. Refile the corrected books
   The corrected entries take an evening to copy clean. The market clerk sits across from you and signs each page as you finish it. The assessor will find nothing.
5. Collect payment from the clerk
   'Assessor arrives Wednesday. He won't find a thing. You saved the market its license. Take this from the discretionary purse.'
