Meet the constable at the bank
'Maren Hask. Forty years brewing, never sick a day. Found at the bottom of her cellar steps with a broken bottle in her hand. We're calling it an accident. I'm not.'
Read the ground outside the cellar
Two sets of bootprints in the mud, not hers. One walked in steady. One walked out fast. The fast one favoured the left side, like he was carrying something heavy under his coat.
Check her herb plot for tampering
A calm bloom row was pulled at the root, not cut. Whoever took the herbs knew what part to grab and didn't have time to do it right. There's a torn supplier slip in the dirt.
Match the slip at Longha Brewery
The brewer reads the slip and frowns. 'That's my hand. I sold Maren a draught of pale draught last month. She told me it was for a buyer who wanted strong sleep. The buyer signed off as her apprentice.'
Bring the constable the name
The constable reads the slip twice. 'Her apprentice has been at the inn three nights running, paying in coin she didn't earn. We'll have him before the door closes. You did right by her.'
