Walkthrough

  1. Speak to the warden at Highroot Bank
    The warden has lost two men in two days. 'The pack you cleared on the road. Their leader didn't run. He went up. Whatever was leading him is still up there. It's older than any of them.'
  2. Hear the canopy songs at the court
    The bards at the court know three songs about the canopy. Two are warnings. The third is a name. They sing it quietly and look at you when they finish.
  3. Pick up the trail in the grove
    The trail is older than the warband's. Long stride. Deep claw. The grove animals are gone in a wide circle. You follow the empty quiet uphill.
  4. Cut the high path through the mine
    The mine cut is the only way up to the canopy ridge without going through open ground. The miners stopped work three days ago and won't say why. You take the lanterns and go.
  5. Brief at the Highroot Court
    The court summons the council. They know the lizardman by name.
  6. Hang the charm in the grove
    The charm catches on the bough you pick and turns once. The wind dies. The trail you've been following ends in a clearing that wasn't there yesterday.
  7. Drive the lizardman onto the trail
    The charm lifts the grove's cover and the lizardman breaks onto the trail. You meet it in the open with the high sun against its eyes.
  8. Burn the body on the trail
    You stack the pyre on the open trail and set it. The smoke goes straight up. Whatever held the canopy quiet for a hundred years is gone with it.
  9. Tell the bards the song is finished
    They listen without interrupting and then write the ending into the third song. One of them slides a copy across to you. 'Most never come back to give us the last verse. We thank you for ours.'
  10. Recover at the Highroot Grove
    The grove is quiet again. The animals are back at the watering pool. The lizardman will not return.
  11. Close the contract with the warden
    The warden signs the contract without reading it. 'Two men this week. None next. That's how I'll measure it.'
