Miners want a proper feast after a long, brutal season at the vein.

Walkthrough

1. Meet the camp cook
   'Boys have been on hardtack and stew since the thaw. Six weeks. I want squid on the table tonight and I want the foreman to cry a little.'
2. Start the long roast
   She has three fires going and an oven you could fit a sheep in. 'Roast goes on now. While it cooks you'll fetch me one thing from the vein.'
3. Beg salt off the foreman
   The foreman points at a sack of rock salt with the toe of his boot. 'Take it. Tell her I want the heel of the roast or I'll know.'
4. Carve the squid course
   The squid goes in the pan with the salt and a knob of butter the cook had hidden in the meal tin. The whole kitchen smells like a wedding. She hums while she carves.
5. Hand off the takings
   The foreman pays the cook in coin and her in the heel of the roast. She passes you a third of the coin without counting. 'Come back next thaw.'
