Meet the fence's contact
A bookish clerk slides a tally sheet over the counter. 'Six crates a fortnight, paid in dried lobster. Five names on the receipts. Two of them I know from the harbor.'
Cut off the morning barge
The barge ties up at low tide. You wait in the reeds until the second man steps off, then walk the gangplank like you belong there. The crates are exactly what the tally said.
Hit the field warehouse
The warehouse is hidden behind a stand of dry hedgerow. Inside: six crates, a ledger written in the same hand as the lieutenant's, and a side door that opens onto the road.
Hand the ledger to the clerk
The clerk reads it twice and pales. 'Five names. Three of them work in this bank. I'll see them out today. The other two are yours.'
Finish the last two at the wharf
They were waiting on the same barge that came in this morning. Neither of them ran. The fence in Longha will sleep easier when the word reaches him. So will the clerk.
